What is AEO?

AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — is the discipline of getting your brand cited inside AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and other large language models. If SEO is about winning Google's ranked results, AEO is about winning the answer itself.

Why AEO now

In 2025 and 2026, the search behavior of millions of users shifted. Instead of typing a query and scanning ten blue links, they ask an AI assistant a natural-language question and read the synthesized answer. Perplexity crossed a billion queries. ChatGPT added web search. Google's own AI Overviews now sit above the classic results.

The problem: if an LLM synthesizes an answer without naming your brand, you don't exist for that user. Getting cited inside the answer is the new page-one ranking.

How AEO differs from SEO

SEO optimizes for algorithmic ranking of pages. AEO optimizes for citation inside synthesized answers. The signals overlap — good content still matters — but the emphasis shifts.

AEO leans harder on: entity clarity (schema.org, unambiguous brand naming), citation-worthy factual statements, structured Q&A content, LLM-friendly document structure (headings, definitions, lists), and being present in the retrieval corpora that LLMs pull from (Bing, Google, curated third-party sources).

The AEO signals that actually matter

Entity graphs and JSON-LD schema (Organization, Person, Service, FAQPage, Article) that let LLMs identify what you are and what you do.

Content structured as questions and answers — LLMs preferentially cite Q&A format because it matches user query patterns.

Presence on high-authority third-party sources — Wikipedia, industry directories, comparison sites. LLMs weight external mentions heavily.

A stable, canonical URL with SSR-rendered HTML (not client-only React) so retrieval indexers can extract text.

Explicit allow-listing of AI crawlers in robots.txt — GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended.

An `llms.txt` file at your root — the emerging standard for LLM-facing site indexes.

How to measure AEO

Share-of-voice inside AI answers: run a fixed set of prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini monthly. Count how many of them cite your brand vs. competitors.

Citation-source tracking: for each AI citation, log which of your pages the LLM linked to. Feeds back into your content strategy.

Referral traffic from LLM domains: chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com — this now shows up in Google Analytics and is growing month over month.

FAQ

01

Is AEO the same as GEO?

Not quite. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) focuses on citations inside standalone AI assistants — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) focuses on inclusion in generative surfaces attached to traditional search engines — Google AI Overviews, Bing Copilot. The signals overlap heavily, but the surfaces differ. Most modern AEO programs cover both.
02

Does AEO replace SEO?

No — it extends it. Google still drives the majority of qualified search traffic in 2026, so SEO remains foundational. But if your only strategy is Google organic, you're missing a growing share of your customer's actual search behavior. Modern programs run SEO and AEO as one integrated discipline.
03

How long until AEO shows results?

LLMs update their retrieval indices more frequently than Google reindexes, so citation movement often shows in weeks rather than months. Meaningful share-of-voice gains typically appear in 30-90 days once the schema, content structure, and citation-source pages are in place.
