What is GEO?

GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — is the practice of engineering your brand into AI-generated results inside traditional search engines. Google AI Overviews (the boxed AI answer above the ten blue links), Bing Copilot answers, and similar surfaces are GEO territory. If AEO wins the citation inside ChatGPT, GEO wins the citation inside Google.

Why GEO is different from SEO

Traditional SEO gets you into position 1-10 in Google's classic results. GEO gets you into the AI Overview box that sits above them.

Google's AI Overviews use a different retrieval pipeline: they pull from a curated subset of high-quality, high-relevance sources and synthesize an answer with inline citations. Getting cited requires content that reads as extractive and quotable, not just search-relevant.

GEO signal set

Structured, extractive content: short definitions, bulleted lists, numbered steps, tables — anything an LLM can pull as a self-contained snippet.

Entity clarity via schema.org markup — especially Organization, Service, HowTo, FAQPage, and BreadcrumbList.

Factual, specific claims tied to sources or first-party data — vague marketing copy doesn't get cited.

Freshness signals — dateModified, up-to-date statistics, current-year references.

Authoritative external presence — being mentioned in high-authority sites that Google's AI retrieval pipeline treats as ground truth.

GEO vs traditional SEO — where they overlap

Most GEO wins are also SEO wins. Clean information architecture, strong internal linking, semantic HTML, schema markup, and fast Core Web Vitals all help both.

The divergence is at the content layer. GEO rewards content that reads well to an extractive LLM: clear headings, bounded sections, definitions at the top, factual density. SEO tolerates more storytelling and long-form.

FAQ

01

Can you optimize for GEO without hurting SEO?

Yes — in fact well-executed GEO improves classic SEO. Structured content, clear entity signals, and factual density are all quality signals Google has always rewarded. The only tension is stylistic: GEO-friendly content is more terse and encyclopedia-like than typical brand-voice copy.
02

Does GEO work for all industries?

It works best for informational and consideration-stage queries — 'what is', 'how does', 'best', 'compare'. Transactional queries (near-me, buy, book) still favor classic local results. Most agencies target GEO on top-of-funnel content and SEO on bottom-of-funnel.
